Famine: emergy is still there.Summary: In the article, "The Famine: Emergency is still there No, Virginia, the famine in Africa isn't over." the author Mcdougald Dennis talks about famine that still killing people in Africa. However, he focused more on the aid that USA is sending to Africa. He started by pointing out the situation USA is facing with homeless problem. However, they send help to Africa. Example, they sent $ 2.25 million in Sudan in order to buy food for straved people. He concluded by saying that Africa will continue to experience sickness and starvation if nothing is done soon.
Analysis: The article was informative but not deep. The author did not use many examples to support his points. He was credible enough because he knew well the topic and what he was talking about. Reflection: It has good information but I would not use it for my research because it is vague and narrow. It did not complete my preview article since it was the same information I have so far. Indentifying famineSummary: Graig Gundersen discussed in his article, "Indentifying Famine" about solution to prevent famine and how to detect it. First, he compared Africa with another continent by the fact that famine is still a threaten in this miserable continent. Second, he talked about a way to prevent famine that ths to collect and categorise information in vulnerable areas. To detect who are hungry and how to bring aid in their place. Third, he talked about the major challenge thar is HIV crisis. Many people are sick and they need first medical assistance in order to reduce famine in the continent. He finally talked about the two main problems of food aid. The first problem is that food aid are distrubuted too late whilee many people are already dead. The second probem is that the distribution depends on factors present in donr countries. The solution he proposed is that a statistic needs to be done to know where people are suffering and how to bring food to them on time.
Analysis: This article is full of great and intersting information. The author built his credibility by supporting his ideas with testimony and reliable statistics. He also used many examples and cited some credible and trustworthy articles. It was clear enough and helped me to learn a lot. Reflection: This article completed my research by giving me new information on how to identify famine in Africa. Gundersen, Craig. "Identifying Famines." BMJ : British Medical Journal (Online), vol. 337, 2008, Research Library, http://ezproxy.cpcc.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/1778066142?accountid=10008, doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bmj.a1178. Behind the famine.Summary: In the article, "Behind the famine." written by John Madeley; the author talks about what is behind famine that people sometimes forget. He started by giving different cause of famine such as disease, higher mortality, droughts, civil war, and natural catastrophe. Famine is affecting over 10million people in Africa and nobody can solve this problem in a year. Another reason of famine is climat change. The author emphasizes on the climate change that leads to an increased of frequency of droughts, flood. People are moving out, farmers have to move in order to save their life. However, he used a little opposition when he said: "The climate change is not a problem in Africa because wetern countries are trying to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions." Climate change is another cause of suffering in Africa because it is making the production and the agricuture activies worse.
Analysis: The article is clear but little bit narrow. The author did not use enough examples or statistics to support his points in order to make it easier tounderstand. It seems like he agreed with something and disagree in the same moment. I just wonder if climate change is really impacting Africa? I know that Africa don't use too much gas that can distroy their climate or increase ozone hole. Reflection:The article was okay because it helped me to know more about the effect of climate change in Africa however, it was unclear and difficult to uderstand. I will join it in my research blog because it has new information. Madeley, John. "Behind the Famine." Appropriate Technology, vol. 38, no. 3, 2011, pp. 30, Research Library, http://ezproxy.cpcc.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/896623452?accountid=10008 Can famine relief meet health and hunger goals?summary: Patrick Webb discussed in his article"Can famine relief meet health and hunger goals simultaneously?" about the link between disease and starvation. He started by comparing the past situation and the actual reality. In the past, starvation brought epidemic infection but today, disease leads to starvation via the loss of productive adults. Most adults are sick and cannot work anymore however, their disease such HIV asks a lot of energy that is given only by food. The matter is disease leads to famine that is killing many people in Africa.
Analysis: The author used many examples to support his points. He also used many touching words that appeal to emotions and motivate people to take action. The article was clear enough and allowed me to know more about the impact of disease in Africa that is another cause of famine. Reflection: This article is like the continuity of my previous articles because it has similar information but deeper. Webb, Patrick. "Can Famine Relief Meet Health and Hunger Goals Simultaneously?" The Lancet, vol. 362, 2003, pp. s40-1, Research Library, http://ezproxy.cpcc.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/199048823?accountid=10008 Famine and MigrationSummary:In the article, " Food carcity and migration : an overview" the author Arup Maharatna discussed about food's crisis that makes people leave their home for a better life. He started first by explaining how famine is doing harm to people mostly in Asia and Africa. However, human being is constantly trying to look for a better life; so famine is not making things easier. He pointed out the cause of famine as a decline of food availibility that is causing death of thousand of people per year. He refered back to the past where people used to traval long distance in their mapless migration in order to run away from starvation. The consequence is that Africa is losing intellectual, talented and competent people because most of them want to migrate in a better standard of living. He concluded by pointed out the worse thing in Africa is thta famine is combined with civil war that people cannot stand. Analysis: The author used a lot of example to comapare famine in the past and now that makes him credible enough. He also stated clear points that were well supported as well. The only problem was he did not talk in details about migration and where they are going. I just wonder whether or not people who migrate are having a better life? However I liked when he said: "others prefer to live the "worse" in their home instead of having a btter life elsewhere." That was touchy. Reflection: This article completed a lot my preview one because it helped me to know in details another consequence of famine that is migration. It was relevant and very helpful. Maharatna, Arup. "Food Scarcity and Migration: An Overview." Social Research, vol. 81, no. 2, 2014, pp. 277-298,502, Research Library, http://ezproxy.cpcc.edu/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/1551708257?accountid=10008. Africans face massive famine. In the article, " Africans face massive famine, UN warns." published by William Booth talks about the worst situation in Africa. According to FAO, 30 millions Africans are in danger of several malnutrition and starvation. The situation is getting worse because the amount of people who are dying is unbelievable. Civil war in the continent is making the situation worse because instead of solving the common problem they have; Africans prefer to fight against each other. The author stated: " Hunger cannot be solved until Africa attains some level of political stability." However, Soviet union and United States keep providing arms, guns and plenty of military supplies that is a way to encourage Africans to continue the war instead of seeking peace. The situation in African is dangerous. The author concluded with a sensitive and touching sentence: " We can deal with drought. But famine is a man made phenomena."
Analysis: The article is short and clear where the author used often Pathos to give the reader an image of how bad the situation is. He was credible enough by supporting each points with details and reliable statistics. It was rich with information. Reflection: The article brings up another cause of famine that is civil war already mentioned in my previous article. It is connected with other and help me to have more information about my line of inquiry. Approaches to reducing Hunger Summary: The article " Successful Approaches to reducing Hunger" published by The Futurist is dealing with the solutions to reduce hunger. They started by stating that the only barrier to reduce hunger is either lack of resources or sufficient knowledge. Then they proposed a list of solution to fight this problem that is killing almost 12,000 children per day. Among those solutions there are: first,to use food banks so that they will donate food for hungry people. Second,To provide food aid that will be more than short-term relief to help starved people to survive for a long term. The third solution is to provide a policy yo combine new agricultural technologies with support for small rural enterprises. For example, Green revolution. The fourth solution is to create national security . The author concluded by stating: " There is not single cause nor single cure, for hunger."
Analysis: The article was simple with appropriate vocabulary to help the reader to understand the line of inquiry. The author did not build a large credibility because he or she did not use enough details to support his or her point. It was short and the author did not bother to dig deeper in order to find enough supporting materials. However, United Nations is an organization in charge to help people; where are they to create a food security for Africa? Reflection: This article helped me to complete a list of solutions that I have already read in previous articles about hunger in Africa. "Successful Approaches to Reducing Hunger."
